What to Expect After Varicose Vein Surgery

At Vein & Laser Center, we understand that patients may feel anxious about their upcoming varicose vein surgery. So, to help put your mind at ease, we've compiled a list of things you can expect after your procedure.

One of the most common questions we get from patients is, "will the surgery be painful?" The answer is that while you may feel discomfort during and immediately after the surgery, the procedure is relatively painless. You will be given local anesthesia to numb the area around the incision, and most people report feeling only a minor amount of discomfort.

After the surgery, you can expect some bruising and swelling around the incision site. This is normal and will resolve itself within a few weeks. You may also experience some mild cramping in your legs for the first few days after surgery; this is normal and will go away with time.

Taking it easy for the first few days after your surgery is crucial. We recommend that patients take at least 3-5 days off from work or other activities to allow their bodies to heal. During this time, you should avoid strenuous activity, extended standing or sitting periods, and heat exposure (such as hot baths or saunas). Walking is fine, but try avoiding long walks or anything else that will strain your legs.

Most people report returning to their old selves within 2-3 weeks after surgery. However, following your surgeon's instructions and taking things slowly is essential to ensure a smooth and complication-free recovery.

Post-Operative Care Instructions

·       Wear your compression garment as directed to help reduce pain and swelling.

·       Elevate your legs as much as possible for the first few days after surgery., as it will also help reduce pain and swelling.

·       Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day, for the first few days after surgery.

·       Take your pain medication as prescribed.

·       Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and long periods of standing or sitting for the first week after surgery. Walking is encouraged.

·       You may shower 48 hours after surgery but do not soak in a tub or go swimming until your incisions have healed (usually 7-10 days).

·       If you have sutures, they will be removed 7-10 days after surgery. Staples are removed 10-14 days after surgery.

·       You will have a follow-up appointment two weeks after surgery so we can check on your progress and answer any questions you may have.

If scheduled for varicose vein surgery, there's no need to worry—the procedure is relatively quick and painless, and most people fully recover within a few weeks. Just be sure to take it easy afterward and follow your surgeon's instructions, and you'll be back on your feet in no time!
