What Are the Warning Signs of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis, according to WebMD, is when blood, usually in a person’s legs, pelvis, or inner thighs, moves too slowly through the veins. If the blood moves too slowly, there is a severe risk for a significant blood clot to form; a blood clot called deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

According to the Mayo Clinic, certain medical conditions can lead to DVT, and lack of movement for a significant period can often lead to these clots forming. This is often the case if a person is recovering from surgery or an accident or put on bed rest, or even if you are traveling long distances by car or plane.

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition because the blood clots that can form in your veins can break loose, travel throughout your body’s bloodstream, and get trapped in the lungs, causing a potential for a pulmonary embolism.

So, now that you know what deep vein thrombosis is, how can you protect yourself from it? The best way to guard yourself and your loved ones from this potentially fatal clot is to know what it looks like. While it’s true that there are not always significant symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, the Mayo Clinic states that when symptoms do appear, they can include: significant swelling in the area, pain (in the case of the leg, the pain usually begins in the calf and is described as cramping and soreness), red or discolored skin, and a feeling of warmth around the infection. If you or someone you know is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it is time to see a doctor immediately.

To prevent DVT development, the NHS recommends staying at a healthy weight, staying active, and drinking plenty of fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated. In addition, it is best to avoid sitting still for long periods, crossing your legs (which can constrict blood flow), smoking, and excessive amounts of alcohol.
